Seeing a swing coach to improve my game…This has the potential to be a birdie

A little humor before we start!!

Now you’re getting closer to making true positive change in your golf game…  Let’s talk about the swing coach (golf pro).

You make an appointment to go see a swing coach (golf pro) at your local golf course or country club.  You’re thinking to yourself, this is the perfect thing to do!  I can see why this way of thinking is logical.  But, I want to caution you; this may be putting the cart before the horse.

Again, I’m here to educate!

Yes, there are many golfers that just need minor instructional tips such as, adjustments to their grip, stance, or swing pattern. They have no physiological restrictions.  So, this would be a valid approach for them to take.  But, “These golfers’ are the exception, not the rule”.

What I would like you to think about with this approach is to understand the swing professionals (golf Pros) role.  Their role (job) is to work with what they are presented with, your body and swing mechanics.  So they are going to use all the techniques and strategies from their professional training and experience to help improve your swing, and they will.  But, more times than not your improvement from the lesson may only be marginal.

What I would like you to consider and recognize while you’re taking your lesson is if you’re finding it difficult and frustrating to get your body into the correct positions the swing coach (golf pro) is suggesting. Tune into your body. Focus on how your body feels from you toe nails to your finger nails while performing swings.  Do you feel tight, are you losing your balance, or do you have any pain.  If you are experiencing any of these or other physical challenges, you more than likely have some physiological-biomechanical deficits that need to be addressed.

That brings me back to process!

If you’re experiencing some of these physiological deficits the swing coach (golf pro) probably shouldn’t be the first go to.   The process that would be to most beneficial to the golfer experiencing these deficits would be to first locate a Golf Performance Specialist.  They would have the skills and knowledge to identify what’s causing these physiological issues that are contributing to these improper swing mechanics/limitations and assist in addressing them.

Then work with the swing coach (golf pro) and you will experience far more positive gains in swing performance and improvement in your game.
